Talk announcement: Data exploitation: how your digital doppelganger has been exploiting you all along

May 1st 2017

Today we announce another speaker: Eva Blum-Dumontet with her talk about data exploration.

In the world of the "internet of shit" - where it's not just our computers and phones that gather data about you but also your cars, your pacemaker, the toys you children play with and your fridge among many others - the dramatic growth in data collection has led to a loss of control over data.

Who owns this data that forms your digital doppelganger? How is it processed and collected? And more importantly, how is it used to make decisions about you? Those are some of the questions Privacy International has been trying to address in order to help us reclaim control over our devices. This talk will aim at explaining how data exploitation works and how it has already started affecting our lives so we can be prepared for and start resisting the exploitation.

Eva is a Research Officer at Privacy International and collaborates with international partners on promoting a better awareness of surveillance programs. They are carried out in countries across Africa, South America, and Asia. She also takes part in the research and investigations aiming at presenting evidence of the export of surveillance technologies. Prior to joining Privacy International, she worked as a journalist for the Franco-German TV channel Arte, where she was covering European affairs. Come see her talk at SHA2017!
